La Scala Theatre

Known in Italy only as "La Scala" it's one of the most important opera house in the world.

La Scala's season open is on 7 December, Saint Ambrose's (Sant'Ambrogio) Day, Milan's patron, and is so important that normally the President of Italian Republic is present.

La Scala hosts an Academy to train ballet dancers, musicians and technical professionals related to performing arts.

This theatre was built between 1776 and 1778 on the former location of the church of Santa Maria alla Scala (a noble family), from which La Scala gets its name, to replace a previous theatre burned after a carnival gala.

The original structure of the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini  was renovated in 1907. Rebuilt after a bombing in 1943, was reopened on 11 May 1946 with a memorable concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini, one of the best conductors of La Scala with Claudio Abbado and Riccardo Muti.

Attached to the theatre you can find a theatrical museum (Museo Teatrale alla Scala) and a library (Biblioteca Livia Simoni) with more than 140000 volumes related to theatre history.
